Board of Directors
The Sun Prairie Public Library Foundation is served by a volunteer board of directors. These directors are community leaders who bring their individual expertise to assist the Foundation with its mission to raise much needed funding for the Sun Prairie Public Library. Members of this year’s board include:
Aaron is married to Erica and they have one son, Landon. Aaron earned an MPA from the University of Northern Illinois and in December of 2012, he was appointed the Administrator of the City of Sun Prairie. Besides his position as President on the Sun Prairie Public Library Foundation Board he is also a member of Rotary International and the Friends of the Sun Prairie Public Library. His hobbies include martial arts, taking his son to the zoo, and going to movies with his wife.
Kassandra joined the Foundation board in March 2018, and is so thrilled for the opportunity to serve the library, which has always been one of her favorite places. Kassandra is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, and currently works as a Meetings and Events Coordinator for the World Council of Credit Unions. In her free time, Kassandra enjoys snuggling up with her dog and chipping away at her GoodReads book list, traveling, and trying new foods with her husband.
Jason, his wife and their two boys have resided in Sun Prairie since 2012. He works as a Vice President, Portfolio Manager at BMO Harris Bank. He joined the Foundation board in 2016 and sits on the finance and marketing committees and is now the Board’s Financial Secretary. In his free time, Jason enjoys golfing, ultimate frisbee, home improvement projects, and the occasional craft beer.
Librarian by day, you can find Nicole at the Circulation Desk right here at the Sun Prairie Public Library. She and her husband traveled the world raising a gaggle of kids and dogs while deployed abroad. Between baseball games and dance lessons, Nicole serves as the Chair of the Website Committee and as our Secretary.
Book'n It Run Chair
Nicole has worked as a customer service representative and marketing specialist at Harms Insurance Group for over 11 years. She joined the Foundation board in 2014 and brought her social media marketing skills to promote our events. In 2015, she sat on the Marketing Committee and has chaired one of the Foundation’s two major fundraisers, the Book’n It Run for Literacy since 2016.
Mark has lived in Sun Prairie for nearly 20 years with his wife and two children, all avid library users. As the VP of Marketing for Monona State Bank, he utilizes his marketing and web management experience to chair the Foundation’s Marketing Committee and assist with the Foundation’s web site.
Theresa McIlroy is excited to join the Foundation Board again. She has served as President and Book’n It Chair during past terms and looks forward to putting some of that knowledge and skill to work again. She has been a member of the Sun Prairie Community for 54 years; has one son and one grandson.
Terry (Theresa) also serves on the Sun Prairie Historical Library and Museum Board, belongs to Sun Prairie Optimists, and is a member of the H.W. Schroeder Council of Telephone Pioneers.
Dan O’Brien has been involved in the Sun Prairie Community for over ten years. He joined the Foundation Board in 2013 and serves on the Finance Committee, Planned Giving Committee, and heads up Logistics for the Book’n It Run. His wife Heidi stays at home with their three boys, Chase, Blake and Ty.
A Board Director since 2018, Carol Esser brings plenty of enthusiasm and love of the library. Carol has an education degree from UW-Stout and taught at Sun Prairie High School in the Family and Consumer Education department for 32 years. In addition to the Foundation, Carol is active in the Sun Prairie Optimist Club, the city’s CATV Commission, and at Sun Prairie United Methodist Church. She is the mother of four children and grandmother of seven, and wife to Mayor Paul Esser.
George Frank joined the Foundation Board in May of 2018. George and his family have always loved the library and he looks forward to helping the Foundation continue to grow. Former City Council member, George is a realtor serving Sun Prairie and the surrounding area.
New to the board in 2019, Josh is a resident of Sun Prairie and married to a SP native, Rachael. They have 3 children who are frequent visitors to the library. Josh is the owner of American Family – Josh Erickson Agency LLC serving Sun Prairie and Madison where he supports a wide range of commercial and personal insurance products. When he isn’t working for his customers or shuttling his kids to their activities, Josh enjoys spending time reading, running, biking, and skiing!
Staci is a nearly lifelong resident of Sun Prairie. She is an alum of Sacred Hearts Catholic School and Sun Prairie High School. She is an assistant to the President in the executive office at TASC and is thrilled to use what she has learned about philanthropy while working at TASC to give back to the community where she was born and raised. Staci is a mother of three children and in her free time loves to bike, hike, kayak, travel, explore local breweries with her husband, and read.
Bob and his wife Linda have lived in Sun Prairie for 25 years. Their two adult children attended Sun Prairie public schools. Bob is retired from the University of Wisconsin System Administration where he worked closely with staff from all UW System campuses on planning to meet student and staff needs. Bob’s experience included leadership and planning for library and information technology for the University of Wisconsin System, with the goal of providing access to educational information and resources to all students in the UW System.
Sarah Barnes has lived in the Dane County community for 18 years and is an attorney and trust officer with Bank of Sun Prairie. As a devoted literacy advocate she is delighted to join the Foundation Board. An active member of the Dane County non-profit community, Sarah has served as President and board member of the The Arc – Dane County, is a member of The Junior League of Madison, and frequently volunteers with the Henry Vilas Zoo. She looks forward to putting the knowledge and skills she has gained with these organizations to work for the Sun Prairie Library Foundation.
Sun Prairie Public Library Director
Svetha Hetzler has been the Sun Prairie Library Director since July 2015. Before coming to Sun Prairie, she was the Head of Youth Services at the Middleton Public Library. Svetha was a public and youth services librarian in Florida, Connecticut, and New York before coming to Wisconsin. She grew up in New York and studied at Boston University, later receiving her Masters in Library Science from the University of South Florida. She has served on several national committees, including the South Asia Book Award committee. Svetha enjoys running and always looks forward to being a part of the annual Book’n It event.
Library Board Liason
Rex Owens is the president of the Sun Prairie Public Library Board and currently serves as liaison between the Library Board and the Foundation Board. Rex enjoys our state bike trails, kayaking, theater productions and is the author of the contemporary Irish fiction series, Murphy’s Troubles, Out of Darkness, and soon to be released, Dead Reckoning.
Library Staff Liaison
Sarah Michaelis is the Administrative and Project Librarian at the Sun Prairie Library and has worked at the library since 2016. She is excited to join the board as the staff liaison. Sarah’s passion for reading and libraries began early, spending quality time exploring the stacks of the Madison Public Library-Lakeview Branch as a child. Later, while attending UW-Madison and working at the UW Social Work Library, she was inspired to become a librarian. Sarah is also a member of the Sun Prairie Optimist Club.
Cindy has been the Foundation‘s Administrative Assistant since fall of 2011. You’ve probably seen her at the library, as she has worked in Circulation Services since 2005. Prior to this Cindy educated her children at home after retiring from a 17-year stint as a metallurgical engineer performing failure and material analysis.
